The 1 1/2 Kickback is a stationary freestyle trick that I first saw in "the Bones Brigade Video Show" -- the first Powell Peralta video. The video contains a great segment of Rodney Mullen skating in the freestyle area at the Del Mar Skate Ranch. In this trick, you jump up, cause the board to flip over , but in the middle of the jump you kick it back so that it does a 1 1/2 flip before you land on it.
In other words, this is kind of like one of Rodney's current "kickflip-underflip" moves. You might think of it as an old-school version of the kickflip underflip. I find that my posture at the beginning of this trick really determines if I make it or not. If I start with my knees bent, bending slightly forward at the waist, with my hands in front of me, I do this trick much better. For one thing, it helps me keep my balance if I come down on the edge of the board. Check out the video clip here. |

In frame one, I'm setting up for the trick. My weight is on my back foot, and my front foot at about the middle of the board, with just the toes on the board. In frame 2, I jump up. As I jump, my front foot pushes down on the edge of the board, causing it to flip over. When it gets about halfway over (actually a little before the wheels are pointed straight up) that front foot will kick it back in the other direction. |

In frame 3, my front foot has just popped the board back in the opposite direction, changing the direction of the flip. In Frame 4, I am starting to raise the front foot. |

In frames 5 and 6, the board is flipping as it would in a kickflip. I'm still in the air, and my front foot is still coming up. In frame 6, I'm hovering there as the board is upside down. |

In frames 7 and 8, my legs are extending down to make a nice solid landing. The board completes approximately 1 1/2 flips. I land the trick in about the same place I started. |
