Bertleman Slide

With the Dog Town movie having just come out, I'm getting a lot of requests for moves from the movie. Here is one -- the 'Bert, or Bertleman Slide, named after the surfer of the same name. This is a pretty simple move by today's standards, but that's alright. The important thing about this move is that you need to flow through it smoothly. The Z-Boys, of course, did this move much cooler than me, but here goes...

Check out the video clip here.

This moves works best on a banked wall. You can do it on flat, but banks are better. Sloped driveways are good too.

Approach the wall as if you were going to do a frontside carve. As you get closer, begin to bend your knees and lower your body (frame 1).

As you go up the wall, one foot should be on the tail, the other above the front trucks (on a shortboard, at least). You are already low, so begin to reach down with your front hand.

As you continue to flow frontside, simultaneously lift your front wheels just a bit and plant your front hand on the ground. Actually, in these frames I don't quite have my hand on the ground yet.

OK. Now with my hand planted on the bank, I push the rear wheels out, into a slide. At the same time I put the front wheels back down.

The hand on the ground is your pivot-point. The whole moves pivots around that hand.

In frame 7, I push the board out a bit more. My weight is pretty evenly distributed between my feet and my hand.

Something to point out: I try to keep the leading edge of my body facing the ground. It is easy to end up with both hands on the ground and your back facing the ground. You can still ride it out from that position, but it's more of a Layback rather than a 'Bert.

Having stretched it out a bit, now it's time to get back on top of the board. This is where the banked wall helps. You can just let the board flow back under under you. Have fun!
